Sonowal was president of the powerful students body, All Assam Students Union, from 1992 to 1999. But, his career reached new heights in 2005 when, acting on his petition, the SC scrapped Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, 1983 (IMDT). This earned him the title “Jati Nayak’.
