Modi Government approves 10% reservation quota for economically backward upper caste

On Monday the Union Cabinet approves 10% reservation quota for economically backward upper caste, moves comes after the loss of BJP in three prominent states of India. Though experts say its difficult to pass this bill as a government will need the amendment, the constitution for it where it is defined as overall quota percentages cannot exceed 50 %. some legal experts are also saying no need for a constitutional amendment, instead, bring a ‘Reservation Act’ (maybe through an ordinance), get the President ’s assent and place it in the 9th schedule like states of Tamilnadu.

“This move by Narendra Modi government is seen as masterstroke before an election to win back its core middle class upper caste voters, who ditched the party for ST/SC act ordinance and pressed “NOTA” in recently held assembly election “.

Who can be qualified as economically backward ?

This reservation is meant for economically backward non SC/ST/OBC people but it is yet to be revealed weather Muslims, sikh’s & other minority community will also be a part of IT or not !

Economically backward person will be the one who

• Annual income below 8 lakhs
• Agricultural land below 5 hectare
• Residential below 1000 sq ft
• The residential plot below 109 yards in the notified municipality.
• The residential plot below 209 yards in non notified municipality area.

“Experts say the criteria will cover almost 80% of the total population and will be lost the purpose that is why it’s almost certain that it ll not pass through parliament even it passes, it ‘ll be challenged in a court of law. “
